Contextual Fit

Project 2: Contextual Fit

The Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new addition should have its own presence.

Backstory:

The Smith family would like to renovate their beautiful home, more famously known as “The Smith House”. They will be adding a Master Suite, kitchen, new family room, an Exercise Room and a formal outdoor area. The Smith Family’s oldest Son is coming home from serving time overseas. An exercise room will serve as a place for his at home physical therapy. More importantly a scenic Family room will serve as a bonding area for the family to reconnect after the years spent apart. Their son has found solace and therapy in nature and loves flowers, so an outdoor area for activities such as family dinners overlooking the water, or merely just admiring the landscape and nature in general is key to his integration back into the family.

Ranking:

  1. The family room as the most important aspect of the son’s return is reconnecting with his family.

  2. The outdoor area serves as the second most important space as it will not only help him bond with his family, but he can use it as a form of meditation.

The main inspiration in the design of the addition was a flower. A flower not only is what the son loves and is passionate about; but it represents his growth as a man and a husband, and with the addition their family will continue to grow and flourish.
